General.

Explain the different types of Rise and Fall that you know. (There are a few figures which will fall outside the following types eg. Natural Hover Telemark, Hover Corte over 2 bars.).

Basic Waltz. Commence to rise e/o 1, Continue to rise on 2 & 3, Lower e/o 3.
Foxtrot/Quickstep. Rise e/o 1, Up on 2 & 3, Lower e/o 3.
Chasse. Commence to rise e/o 1, Continue to rise on 2 & 3, Up Lower e/o 4.
Weave in Waltz. Commence to rise e/o 1, Continue to rise on 2, Up Lower e/o 3.
Weave in Foxtrot. Rise e/o 1, Up on 2 to 7, Lower e/o 7. (Sustained Rise is where Up is held for 3 or more steps eg
Natural Zig Zag from PP only has 4 steps of sustained rise).
Ladies Heel Turn. Rise slightly e/o 1 NFR, Continue to rise on 2, Up Lower e/o 3.
Exceptions – Zig Zag Quickstep & Natural Twist Turn Foxtrot.
Natural Spin Turn, Impetus Turns, & Man’s Outside Spin. Rise e/o, Up Lower e/o 5 & 6 Natural Spin
Turn, 2 & 3 Impetus Turn, 2 & 3 Outside Spin Man.
Reverse Corte. Rise on 2, Up Lower e/o 3 Man.
Fallaway Whisk. Commence to rise e/o 1, Continue to rise on 2, Lower on 3)
No Foot Rise. To be applied as necessary to the above rise and fall types. (Two Types of NFR).

 

When a Heel Turn is danced what possible foot positions will the third step take?

Man: LF Diagonally Forward in PP L Side Leading. Open Impetus
LF Side & Slightly Back. Closed Impetus.
Lady: Forward. Reverse & Natural Turns.
RF Forward in CBMP outside partner. Zig Zag in Quickstep.
LF Forward preparing to step outside partner Left Side Leading. 3 Natural Weave Foxtrot, 7 of Running Right Turn, 3 Natural Twist Turn Foxtrot (also counted &).
RF Forward & Slightly to Right in PP, Right Side Leading. Open Telemark to Wing.
RF Diagonally Forward in PP Right Side Leading. Open Telemark to Cross Hesitation.
RF Diagonally Forward in PP. Open Telemark Natural Turn Foxtrot.
Side & Slightly Back Double Reverse Spin, Closed Telemark,.
LF side RF Brushes towards LF. Natural Telemark.
LF Side. Hover Cross.
NB. All have a forward connotation except side and slightly back for Double Reverse Spin, & Closed Telemark. LF side RF brushes towards LF for Natural Telemark & side for Hover Cross.
NB. All the Side or Side and Slightly Back steps are in closed position for Man and Lady. The Forward step in
CPMP OP in the Zig Zag is in closed position.

 

When a Heel Turn is danced what possible foot position will partner take on the Third Step?

Man: Back. Natural and Reverse Turns
LF Back in CBMP. 3 Zig Zag
Right Foot Back Right Side Leading. 3 Natural Weave Foxtrot, 7 of Running Right Turn.
LF Side and Slightly Back in PP. Open Telemark to Wing
LF Side and Slightly Forward in PP. Open Telemark to Cross Hesitation.
LF Sideways in PP. Open Telemark Natural Turn
LF Side and Slightly Forward. Man’s Closed Telemark.
LF closes to RF without weight Toe Pivot. Double Reverse Spin.
RF crosses behind Lf slightly back Natural Twist Turn Foxtrot.
Lady: RF Side in PP having brushed to LF. Open Impetus.
RF Diagonally Forward having brushed to LF. Closed Impetus.
NB. When in PP and also in Man’s Closed Telemark a side connotation is used.


 

What is normal rise & fall for a lady’s heel turn and what is the exceptions?
Rise slightly end of 1 NFR, Continue to rise on 2, Up lower end of 3. Exceptions are the Zig Zag in Quickstep & Natural Twist Turn Foxtrot which have no rise, and Natural Hover Telemark. Step 3 is Up if sustained rise, as in Foxtrot Weave & Natural Telemark etc, is to follow.

What are the only Figures in which the man dances a heel turn?
Impetus Turn & Open Impetus Turn

Is the Rise and fall in the man’s heel turn the same as for the lady
No. Man is Rise end of 2, Up, lower end of 3.

What action does a Man use in some figures that is similar to a heel turn?
A Heel Pull.

Does the Lady use a Heel Pull?
No.

What is unusual about the Lady’s turn when the man does a Heel Pull and what is the exception?
She is on the outside of the turn but completes the turn between 1 & 2. Exception is in the Quickstep Natural Turn.

What are various foot positions of the LF on the 3rd step of a Heel Pull?
LF forward.
LF close to RF without weight.
It is omitted on the rising Heel Pull proceeding the Hover Feather.
Left Knee veers inwards on Step 4 of Natural Hover Telemark.

What is the rise and fall of a heel pull and any exception to this?
There is no rise except prior to Hover Feather when rise is taken on the end of step 2.
Down on 3 rise end of 3 in the Natural Hover Telemark.

The Double Reverse Spin is in the Waltz and Quickstep syllabus. What timing can be used in these dances for this figure.
Waltz – 1 2 & 3 or 1 2 3 &. Quickstep – S S Q Q.

Give the various starting & finishing alignments of the Double Reverse Spin and the amounts of turn that are used.

FDC – 1 turn L to FDC, 7/8 turn L to FLOD, ¾ turn L to FDW
FLOD - 1 turn L to FLOD, 7/8 turn L to FDW.
FDW - 1 turn L to FDW.
NB. These various alignments and amounts of turn makes the Double Reverse Spin a versatile figure for precedes & follows.

What is consistent about the Man’s and Ladies amounts of turn in the Double Reverse Spin?
Man: 3/8 between 1 & 2, balance between 2 & 3. Although he can do ¼ between 1 & 2 when only ¾ turn is made.
Lady: ½ turn between 1 & 2 except 3/8 between 1 & 2 if only ¾ turn is made. Always does 1/8 turn L between 3 & 4. The balance of the amount of turn required is made between 2 & 3.

The Closed Telemark can be danced in Waltz, Foxtrot & Quickstep. What timing can be used in theses dances?
Waltz - 1 2 3 1
Foxtrot - S Q Q S.
Quickstep - S S S S. S Q Q S. Q Q S S (after a reverse pivot).

How many Weaves do you know?
Basic Weave in Waltz and Foxtrot.
Weave from PP in Waltz and Foxtrot.
Natural Weave in Foxtrot. Also Natural Weave from PP.

Which Weaves move DC and which weaves move down LOD?
The weaves from PP which commence Moving DC Man FLOD ( eg. after an Open Impetus or Whisk in Waltz where Man turns 1/8 Left) move down LOD (also after Whisk Moving to Centre commenced Man FDC if only 1/8 turn L between 2 & 3 of weave).
The others move DC including the weave from PP after a whisk in the Waltz where man turns ¼ Left to FDC then takes the first step of weave moving to Centre (this is the given precede for Weave from PP in the Waltz chart.)


 

There are a number of figures that can be used to go around a corner, but which are the ones in which the standard chart description involves the ‘New Line of Dance’?

Whisk at a corner Step 3. FDW of NLOD
Top Spin in Foxtrot Step 3. Pointing DC of NLOD.
Hover Cross Step 3. Pointing DW of NLOD (& Step 4 FDW of NLOD).
Three of the alternative alignments in the Reverse Wave but these are not the standard chart.
Natural Turn in Quickstep Step 5. FDW of NLOD.
Tipple chasse to Right (at a corner) Step 2. FNLOD.
Running Right Turn Step 9. FNLOD. Alternatives not in standard chart are across corner and two corners.
Back Corte in Tango Step 1. Down NLOD.
Natural Promenade Turn Step 4. DW of NLOD end FDW.

The Reverse Pivot can be danced in the Waltz & Quickstep. What timing could be used?
Waltz. &. Quickstep. S or &.

In Tango what is the footwork for Man and Lady on the 2nd step of Open Reverse Turn Lady Outside, Open Reverse Turn Lady in Line, and the Basic Reverse Turn.

What are the amounts of turn for Lady when ½ turn is made?
Just over ¼ L between 1 & 2, just under ¼ L between 2 & 3.
(NB. Lady makes 1/8 between 1 & 2 plus 1/8 between 2 & 3 if only ¼ turn overall, or splits the turn between 1 & 2 and 2 & 3 as normal for the outside of a turn when 3/8 or 5/8 turn is made.

What is the difference in first step of Wing as man when preceded by the Open Telemark?
It is RF forward ‘AND ACCROSS’ in PP & CBMP.

Give the Lady’s amount of turn on the three steps of wing when preceded by Open Telemark or Open Impetus.
Open Telemark: 1/8 between 3 & 4, 1/8 between 4 & 5, ¼ between 5 & 6 then continue to turn body to back DC. (There is no foot swivel on LF on 6) Total ½ plus 1/8 body turn.
(NB. Man makes ¼ turn to FDC).

Explain the Various Alignments and Amounts of Turn as Man.
There are five variations of alignments given in the ISTD Technique Book.
Two are danced down the side of the room in which case 1/8 turn is always made between 4 & 6 and three are danced around a corner in which case ¼ turn is always made between 4 & 6.
The turn on steps 7 to 9 (Heel Pull) is as required so that the Reverse Wave always finishes FDC.
The first four alignments may be commenced FLOD or FW making either 3/8 or ½ turn to end BDW on step 3 then proceed down LOD or around the corner.
The fifth alignment commences FDC with 3/8 turn to BLOD on step 3 then proceed around the corner.
Chart is down side of room from FLOD.
